Western Sydney Hydrogen Hub
One of our renewable gas pilot production facilities, the Western Sydney Hydrogen Hub, was established to demonstrate the effectiveness of renewable hydrogen in helping NSW move towards lower carbon emissions.
Hydrogen was produced by a 500kW on-site electrolyser, powered by the electricity network. Jemena purchased renewable electricity through its retailer’s GreenPower program, ensuring that the electricity used was offset by renewable electricity purchases. Once injected into the existing gas network and blended with natural gas (approximately 2%), the hydrogen produced at the hub was used by homes and businesses in surrounding areas of Western Sydney.
Excess hydrogen could be stored and used to generate electricity as back-up for the grid when required. Hydrogen was supplied to the on-site fuel cell and microturbine, which could generate renewable electricity for the grid. Hydrogen was also supplied for use in hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles.
The WSHH was co-funded by Jemena and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and first commenced injecting renewable hydrogen into the gas network in 2021. The project was developed as a demonstration and trial facility for hydrogen production, storage and injection into JGN’s gas distribution network. Following the successful completion of the project, these trial activities have concluded and the facility is no longer operational.
