Renewable Gas Projects

The rollout of renewable gas across Australia will involve many companies and organisations, from energy distribution and production companies to energy retailers, appliance manufacturers, industry associations, trade specialists and all levels of government.

Several distribution network operators, including Jemena, are already taking the lead on developing renewable gas projects and trials, working with ARENA , and aiming to raise customer and stakeholder awareness about the future of gas in Australia.

Across the country, over 6.5 million residential and business customers rely on natural gas for various appliances and applications, and want to enjoy the same performance and reliability for years to come. As the country transitions to new sources of energy, on the journey to net zero by 2050, renewable gas can play a critical role in helping to get us there efficiently.

Renewable Gas Projects in Action

The development of a biomethane industry in Australia is in its early stages. However, there is growing interest supported by available organic feedstocks, existing gas infrastructure, and emerging policy frameworks. Demonstration projects, such as the Malabar Biomethane Injection Plant, are helping to test feasibility and build industry knowledge.

This project demonstrates biomethane production and injection into the gas network in Australia, providing operational insights into how renewable gas can be integrated locally.

Australia’s Renewable Gas project pipeline

Projects across Australia are exploring the potential for biomethane production and supply, contributing to the development of the sector.

Established renewable gas markets overseas

Renewable gas industries in Europe, the UK and the United States demonstrate large-scale deployment and established market participation.

Other Australian Network Projects and Initiatives

Renewable gas is being explored and developed across Australia by a number of energy networks. Below are some current initiatives led by industry peers.
